Curious George Birthday Cake

March 30, 2021 by Leia

A fun Curious George birthday cake idea for kids.  Using a method that is fairly simple, and worth trying out!

A fun birthday cake idea for kids who love Curious George.

My friend’s little kiddo just turned 3.  Lucky for me, she asked me to make him a cake, and she gave me free rein of the design!  I love doing cakes like this, with no expectations from the parents or kiddo.  I just get to surprise them.

The little guy likes Curious George.  I think Curious George is such a fun character, and I actually did a Curious George cake years ago.  Without doing the exact same thing, I wanted to improve on the original idea with some of today’s popular techniques.

Curious George birthday cake with sprinkles

I kept the sprinkles- but not so many, added a drip around the top edge, and some fun pipping at the top.  Aren’t the bright colors so fun? And the #3 balloon in Curious George’s hand personalizes the image.

Buttercream piped art on birthday cake

The technique for the piped art is not too difficult.  You can see my tutorial by following this link.  The most time-consuming part is making the frosting and coloring it all.  But don’t let that scare you!  Possibilities are endless when it comes to this type of decorating.  Pretty much any image you can trace can be made like this.  Of course, tiny details may be lost, but you get the idea.  At any rate, I think a three-year-old with love it!

I chose a Curious George coloring page that I liked.  I drew the #3 ballon and added that and more balloons to the image.  When using numbers or letters you will need to mirror image your coloring sheet before continuing with the frosting.  You are going to cover the coloring page with plastic wrap and pipe on top of that.  To get the frosting on the cake the plastic wrap will be turned over, so any letters or numbers would be backward- if you didn’t plan ahead and make them backward from the beginning.  Make sense?

What are your kids’ favorite characters?  What cake does this inspire you to make?

For any cake decorating I highly recommend a turntable like this one.

For this type of buttercream piping art, I recommend this piping kit.

I think food can bring people together. I value family dinners and sharing good conversations over a slice of pie or some saucy nachos. Food makes people happy, and I want to help with that. Let's dig deeper →
