How to: Make Fondant Gold Coins

September 8, 2014 by Leia

A few weeks ago I made a Pirate Treasure Chest Cake.  It turned out even better than I imagined.

There were a few parts of the cake that I thought people might want to re-create, for whatever reason.  So, today I am sharing a tutorial on how to make the gold pirate doubloons I used on my cake.

I used colored some fondant yellow, using some Wilton Golden Yellow and a hint of Wilton Copper gel colors.  I rolled the fondant out to about the thickness of a coin and then used some piping tips to cut out the circles.  To make the rings, I used two different sizes of piping tips to cut the circle and then cut out the inside.

To stamp the design on each coin I used some decorative buttons I found at Hobby Lobby.  They weren’t “pirate” buttons, exactly, but the design was close enough.  I lightly dusted each button with some corn starch before stamping them.  So they wouldn’t stick.

Once the coins were cut out and stamped, I sprayed them with some edible spray paint.  You could also use lemon extract mixed with gold luster dust.  You may need to apply several coats to get a dark gold look.  Sweet Sugar Belle has a great tutorial on using the luster dust method.  Edible Gold Spray Paint for making fondant gold coins

Let the coins dry completely.  I put my pan in the oven with just the light turned on, no heat.  Fondant Gold Coins

Here’s the final product.  I used the luster dust method for all the gold bands on the treasure chest.  They had at least two coats.  Buried Treasure Cake with Fondant DoubloonsAny questions?  Do you have another method for making gold fondant?  I’d love to hear your comments below.  🙂
