A new shelf and bedspread really freshen up our neglected master bedroom space.
When we moved into our house back in 2018, almost all of the walls were yellow. When we toured the house before we bought it I don’t remember so much yellow. But after living in it for a year and a half, let me tell you, there was SO MUCH YELLOW! I just couldn’t take it anymore. So right after Christmas of 2019, I set to work painting over all the yellow. (Well almost all of it, my master closet is still yellow…) I now have a collection of white and gray walls. It is so much more to my liking. Anyway, after the painting, I kinda left things alone. I mean during quarantine I cleaned out closets and organized my pantry, but I didn’t do any major decorating or projects. So, this spring, with the weather slightly warming, and hope in the air, I tried to add a little somethin’ somethin’ to one of my most neglected areas of the house. My master bedroom.
So, to give you an idea of what the space looked like before… I had a cute bedspread, but it wasn’t big enough or warm enough for these Montana winters. The wall behind the bed was totally bare. The addition of the curtains did help drastically, but I put those up right after I finished the painting. Anyway, the bedroom was lack- luster to say the least. (Not to mention our piles of crap everywhere, but those are still there…)
So, in the middle of the night a couple months ago, I wasn’t sleeping and I thought it would be a good idea to act on these decorating ideas that were going through my head. At 3:00 am. So I was doing some online shopping and bought myself these black shelf brackets. The hubs was thrilled (enter sarcasm) to learn I had been shopping while in a sleepy, not clear thinking state… Haha. Most of the things I bought were fine, but there are some cheap brackets that I bought from Walmart online, that now need to be returned, but the store won’t take them. What a headache. Anyway, the brackets we did end up using are from Amazon– and they were perfect.
I like that these brackets have the support coming from the top, so they can be easily hidden by your decor on the shelves. So they look more like an actual floating shelf. Plus I like the industrial look that comes with the black metal.
See here you can’t even see the top portion of the bracket.
We happen to have this rough edge board sitting in our garage. Since the hubs didn’t even have to go to the store to buy the wood, that meant this project was even more likely to get done. LOL. He measured the space between the windows and we decided how long we want the shelf, or rather how much space I wanted between the edge of the curtains and edge of the shelf. Once we had the board cut we marked the center point on the wall and measured out equal distances from there on both sides so we knew where to put the brackets. We used sturdy wall anchors, and used a level to make sure everything was square and that the shelf would sit flat.
It took me a couple trips to the store to find some decor pieces that I liked. I already had the salt lamp, and the books are ones that are special to me or are notebooks I use often. The vase, flowers, “&” sign, the black sign, and the big sign are all from Hobby Lobby. The three small plants and the holder they are in came from Ross.
I have been looking for and thinking of a sign for this area for a long time. Since this is our bedroom I wanted any signs or quotes that we used to be special to our relationship. “You’re my favorite” is a line the hubs and I say to each other on the regular. So when I saw that I didn’t even think twice about it, I knew it would be perfect. The big sign also really spoke to me. Our life definitely isn’t perfect, but we’ve made it this far together. We have a life we love. (even with all the piles of crap lining the walls- haha)
I bought these flowers (yes, they are fake) to give a nice spring-time brightness to the room. I plan to change them out seasonally.
You can find the bedspread (duvet cover) here. We have been super happy with it! I got the duvet insert from Sam’s Club. We have a King size bed, just to give you an idea of size in this image.
Overall, this project was super easy. The most time was used in waiting the 2-3 days for the brackets to arrive, and driving to the stores to find the decor I wanted. Installation was a breeze. That’s partly because I made the hubs do it. 😉 I think I’d still like to add a headboard at some point, but I’m liking this change for now.
Thanks for being here and reading along with my life. I hope you are feeling the brightness, and hope that comes with spring. Easter is just around the corner and this has become one of my favorite times of the year.
